Wednesday Trivia, 11/18/15

Hey folks,

Sorry for the slightly late post.

In reading class, we have been doing a lot of compare/contrast. We started with comparing characters. Now, we've moved on to comparing plot elements from different stories. To start, we've looked at the classic story of the Three Little Pigs.

So it got me thinking...

Almost everyone knows that story. So...where did The Three Little pigs come from? Find:
1. The original author.
2. The original publication the story appeared in.
3. The country of origin.

Good luck!

Monday Math Facts 11/16/15

Hey folks,

Hope everyone is staying warm and safe with the winter storm coming tonight. Remember kids, there are a few key actions to take to ensure a snow day:
1. Where your PJs inside out.
2. Flush an ice cube down the toilet.
3. I heard one about putting a spoon under your pillow?
4. Do a snow dance!

There. Now that that's out of the way, here's the 4x table for this week:

4x1 = 4
4x2 = 8

Monday Math Facts, 11/9/15

Hey folks,

First, a reminder: This Wednesday, the 11th, is Veterans Day. Antelope Ridge will be celebrating with two assemblies. The first is at 9:15 for K, 1, 3, and 5 (that's us.) The second one I believe is at 2:00 (but I'm not positive, sorry.)

Our video will be part of the assembly, and it came out GREAT! Your kids were awesome. IF you can't make it to the assembly, I will be sending out a private link to all families tomorrow.

For this week, we're back to the 3x table. I expect to see a lot of participants trying to earn good bucks!

3x1 = 3
3x2 = 6
3x3 = 9
3x4 = 12
3x5 = 15
3x6 = 18
3x7 = 21

Wednesday Trivia and Announcements, 11/4/15

Hey folks,

Welcome back! It's been a great week so far. Just a reminder, parent-teacher conferences are next week. If you have not yet signed up, you're going to have to give me a call or shoot me an email.

Wednesday, November 11th is also our Veterans Day assembly. Ours starts at 9:15, and is K, 1, 3, and 5. It should run about 45 minutes or so.

All of this Veterans Day stuff got me thinking...so your question this week is...

What do all the different parts of the United State flag stand for? (colors, symbols.)
Who designed the first US flag, and what year?
And finally...BONUS (I'm not sure if this one is floating around out there) how many times has the US flag been updated?

Good luck! Bring in your answers tomorrow!

Wednesday Trivia, 10/14/15

Hey folks!

Today in class, we started narrative writing. Every year, to begin story writing I tell the kids the legendary story of "The Ghost Ninjas." It's a "true" story from my childhood. I grew up in a really old colonial house in New England, and so my basement was a pretty scary place for a kid. That led to my imagination creating interesting creatures that dwelled in the darkest corners of the basement.

So I was wondering...

1. What are the five oldest buildings in the United States?

Get your answers in tomorrow for good bucks!

Wednesday Trivia 9/23/15

Hey folks,

We've been working on some pretty exciting stuff in class lately. Tomorrow morning, the 5th graders, with the help of STEM (technology) teacher Mr. McKenzie, will be launching our near-space weather balloon! Cool stuff.

Also tomorrow, the kids will be learning how delicious reading and writing can be! They have been learning about text features, such as headings, numbers, types of print, and diagrams...and how they help enhance our understanding. As a final project, students have been creating their own "How to" poster for making the perfect ice cream sundae. Tomorrow afternoon, we will enjoy some ice cream to see how our how-tos came out.

That got me thinking...

1. Who invented the ice cream sundae?
2. What year was it invented, and where? (HINT: there are a couple theories. I want the earliest one.)

Get your answer in and get a few good bucks tomorrow!

ALSO: Be ready for the 8x table tomorrow!

WEDNESDAY Trivia, 9/16/15

Hey folks,

So I've officially decided...trivia is henceforth moved to Wednesdays, instead of Tuesdays! It will work much better.

I'm going to make this a big one!

Today we started our financial literacy (Young Ameritowne) unit. Students learned about businesses, and how they either sell goods or provide services. So it got me thinking...

1. What are the three largest companies in the US food industry?

Also, today we discussed how next Thursday morning, we are launching a weather balloon as a school! It will reach up to 100,000 feet above sea-level! WOW. So it got me thinking...

1. When were hot air balloons, which can carry people, invented?
2. Who invented it? (HINT: They were brothers.)
3. Who were the TWO passengers?

WOW! That's a lot of questions...so you can earn up to FIVE goodbucks for your answers! That's the same as a week's allowance! Good luck!

Keep studying the 7x table!

Mr. C

Monday Math Facts 9/14/15

Hey folks,

I forgot to have the kids write this in their planners...but this week we are working on the 7x table!

7x1= 7
7x2 = 14
7x3 = 21
7x4 = 28
7x5 = 35
7x6 = 42
7x7 = 49
7x8 = 56 (my favorite!)
7x9 = 63
7x10 = 70
7x11 = 77
7x12 = 84

As a note, since the number 7 has two syllables and therefore takes longer to say, you have to recite the table in 30 SECONDS this week! So get it memorized to earn good bucks on Friday! Good luck!

Tuesday Trivia:

In Science today, we were discussing how the Earth heats unevenly because earth and water heat at different rates. So it got me thinking...

1. What is the hottest place in the world on record? What was the temperature?
2. What is the coldest place in the world on record? What was the temperature?

Get your answers in tomorrow to earn good bucks!

Tuesday Trivia 9/1/2015

Hey folks,

There was an alarming moment to start our school day. Our news report ended with a song by the Beatles...and frighteningly, many students admitted having never HEARD OF the Beatles, while other still...shockingly...admitted to NOT LIKING the Beatles. It was a devastating blow.

That got me thinking...what bands or artists are the best-selling musicians of all time? The Beatles are on the list...along with a few other famous rock groups.

For good bucks, find the TOP FIVE selling artists of all time. (For a bonus good buck, find the top seven...

Good luck!

Hey folks,

One more reminder to parents that this Thursday, from 6:00-6:45 and 7:00-7:45 is back to school night. I look forward to seeing you there!

On to trivia!

In reading class, we're enjoying a fun story called, "McBroom Tells the Truth." It's about a farmer and his family that moves to Iowa, and a trickster neighbor causes all kinds of problems for them.

On that note, I was curious...what are the largest major crops grown and exported from the United States?

Find the top 5 crops in the US, write them down, and earn some good bucks!

Hey folks,

Welcome back! First, a reminder: Back-to-School night for parents is NEXT Thursday, August 27th. (I apologize...I think I had the kids write THIS Thursday in their planners!) It starts at 6:00 PM.

Today in class, we learned about the air we breathe and what air is a mixture of (mostly nitrogen and oxygen.) We also know that air is all around us, and that it makes up our atmosphere...we're walking through the atmosphere right now!

For trivia this week, I'd like you to research something we will be discussing in class in the coming days:

What are the different definable layers of our atmosphere? (2 goodbucks)
BONUS: What naturally occurring gases are lighter than oxygen? HINT: Look up the periodic table of elements. (2 goodbucks)
